UPON PAPER MAGAZINE

ISSUE 03: Lovers
Published 27 May 2013!

As art platform UPON PAPER is enters its second year, we celebrate Lovers in the third issue of our elaborately produced XXL-size magazine. Defined in terms of an objet de désir, UPON PAPER Magazine was destined to take this passion literally, and in our third issue we realize the Lovers leitmotif of with a powerful embrace. Issue 03 presents an outstanding lineup of international contributors, including James Franco, Jeff Burton, Larry Clark, Bill Henson, René Groebli, Rosa Loy and Hans Peter Adamski, and includes many works created specifically for us. They recount the most diverse forms of human affection, emotional ties, and companionship. Loving and being loved, amour fou, self-love, first love, and the love of art, as well as the absence and the end of love – are the themes that the this issue deals with – touching, recalling and sympathizing.

EXHIBITION: LOVERS

Pairs of lovers represent a central subject matter in the history of art. For as long as art has existed, art and love have themselves been involved in a relationship of sorts. Artistic creation often is and often has been shaped by the synergies of artist couples: For example, Picasso and Françoise Gilot as well as Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock have been and remain as important and influential for painting as Lee Miller and Man Ray for photography. The exhibition accompanies the launch of UPON PAPER Magazine issue 03, also on theme Lovers. In the gallery as on the pages of the magazine, artists have channeled their own very individual perspectives on this theme into highly diverse works — utilizing all of the possibilities that the space offers for their presentation.
